Tim,

Do you think the upcoming Fuji Finepix X100 will make your dreams comme true?

It seems to correspond to the description of the perfect compact you do in this post (an X1 with a reasonable price).

Hi,

Yes, looks nice. That said, it's not what I was looking for because it's still a lot bigger than the GF1.

The Samsung NX10 has just been released and I've got my hot little hands on it. Nearly bought a GF-1 but this is better. Same high quality sensor thats in the Pentax Kx and K20D (AP-C), tiny with a superb pancake lens, better ergonomics than GF-1 / EP-1 and cheaper than all of them. Integrated electronic viewfinder and flash. Converters coming for 12 different camera brands (including Nikon and possibly including Leica)

It's an absolute steal at £600 with the 30mm pancake and 18-55mm. I think this is what you might have been waiting for...My other cameras a Nikon D3 so I can sympathise with the weight issues!

I just got a Panasonic LX3 and it's the closest thing I've come to a point&shoot that I've actually fallen in love with.

Sure it's not as fast as my D700, definitely not as good in low light, nor is the sensor huge, but for what it does deliver, I'm very pleased with.

Have a look at the Panasonic LX3 or Leica D-Lux 4. Surprisingly good images. Very small camera as well.

Having said that, I am certainly planning on having a look at the GF-1 as well.

Whatever about the GF-1, the GH-1 is a nice compact. Video included, interchangeable lenses. I've small hands, and it's still small to me! Articulated screen, 4/3 etc. Usual 4/3 noise issue, but seems like a nice camera.

Do try and get a go on a G11 though, you shouldn't be discounting it just because of the small sensor.

Yep, sorry Jeff - it was EOS lens to 4/3rds body.

I think they even lack aperture control!

I'll see if I can find the link I saw...

That doesn't make sense to me. A four-thirds sensor is smaller than an APS sensor, so the image created by a four-thirds lens would be too small for a Canon DSLR. An adapter for the other other way round would be feasible, although such adapters would undoubtedly come at the cost of auto focus etc.

Jim, you mentioned a 4/3rds adapter to EOS. Can you tell me where I could find it? I have a couple of 4/3rd lenses that I could use on my EOS Digital...

Hi Jim,

The G11's a nice little camera, but it still has a small sensor and the problems that come with it.

I can certainly understand that not everyone wants an interchangeable lens compact. Sadly, there are very few options in that market segment. The X1 meets that criteria, but at the cost of a prime lens....

Totally agree on the DP1/DP2. What a waste of an opportunity.

Canon is moving in the right direction with the G11 - it has a lower pixel count (and larger pixel size) than the G10. I'd love to see them do a compact with an APS-C sensor.

Not sure I'd want a compact with interchangeable lenses - glass is expensive enough without having to buy a whole other set :-) That Panasonic does look pretty good though, and ISTR seeing a 4/3rds to EOS mount adapter recently...

Compact cameras aren't a completely lost cause for selective focus - I took this using an Ixus 400!
