Use collections to group photos that intrinsically belong together, creating sub-collections as needed. Examples include photos of friends and family, all black and white images, photos for a particular client, all photos submitted to a stock collection, all finished fine art prints, works in progress, exhibitions, etc.
Don’t create collections for information that’s already provided by the metadata. For example, the IPTC metadata already allows you to store the country, state and location in which a photos was taken, and is conveniently extracted by the metadata browser.
Thanks so much!

Hi there,

You should post this nikkor 50mm f/1.8g af-s instead of the AF Nikkor 50mm
f/1.8D. Cost is about 216.

Over the years I've bought, upgraded and modified my set up and I think I have it pretty good now...
Two porty Premium packs, 6 battery drawers, three converted (by me) to Lith..
4 profoto heads converted to to Hensel porty fit (two with modelling lights)
1 profoto ringflash coverted to Hensel fit
2 extension cables.

WHY...?

After living in NYC I managed to get an old beater porty pack with a converted profoto head and this was what I wanted as you can buy or rent Profoto modifiers anywhere.

So every time a cheap head came up on eBay or an ex rental house I'd get it and get it converted.

Back in London I needed some fresh batteries and almost fell over at the cost of the Lith ones....! yes a 1/3rd of the weight but wow...! A lot of money, so I sourced the batteries myself and I am happy, I can go lightweight or I can go heavy (and run the mains through the older heavy ones via the charger).

Disadvantages...?

I have no idea of the flash duration
The lith batteries only work on slow recycle... but this isn't slow anyway (more digging to be done there as to why)..

It has taken several years to slowly build and upgrade this rig but it is the very best of all three worlds now, lightweight, solid construction, decent recycle times... and profoto heads...!!!!

I use it a lot all over the world and it does give me great quality studio light, a great example is when shooting say in Utah on the Saltflats... even overcast it's bright, then put a big softlight up, say an octa really big screen to shoot through and then the kit just does it's job....

It recycles faster than my MF back does and just goes and goes....

Thanks Tim for a really great article with a serious amount of info there.... wish I had all that 10 yrs ago.... (Bowens Traveller heads, Battery connector, 2x12v batteries hooked up to give us twice as many flashes... weighed as much as a house...!!!

Wow What advice! I was told the same thing about specialising over forty years ago in my first (retail )business so as not to confuse the customer.Things haven't changed. Someone said the same thing a different way a long time ago;
"you can't be all things to all people" When we think of a hamburger we think of Mcdonalds. Chicken/KFC Soft drink/Coke wedding photographer? well that's up to us to market. Another good saying is; "It is better to be the better known then the better..." and never confuse quality with success. You don't have to be a well trained musician to become rich and famous.
Thanks for re-enforcing what I was told ( and not practiced a lot ) back then. I can only hope there is still time left to take your advice.

Timothy, I'm kind of slightly on the edge about my 5D MKii. I like it, but I don't love it for the same reasons you said. But now that I've invested in their L lenses.... I mean it seems easier to ditch the MkII and just upgrade to the EOS 1DX. If you were in my shoes, what would you do now? I know you switched quite a while ago, but given the technology they put in the 1DX, I could use another opinion. Thanks.

I travel frequently, and have never had any problems with carry-on luggage. Usually consists of a 5d Markk II, 70-200 USM II, 16-35mm, 50mm, flashes, triggers, macbook pro and usually some books and a bit of clothing.

The bag I use is a incase camera bag that looks like a normal backpack, never have they even asked me to weight it.

Going to fly again to South Africa next monday so we will see if I get into any problems then. But last year I flew +40 times and no problems at all.

Thankx a lot.....great article

you solved a few quesitions i had in mind regarding organizing photos using lightroom.

I like the part which says about using hierarchical keywords ..and a lot of keywords to keep a good database.

just 1 thing i didn't understand about your collection hierarchy was the resources collection....i would like to know about it!!

thankx

The biggest glaring shortcoming of Nikon for me, is a lens to compete with canon 100-400L. the Nikon 80-400 is old and bad. 3rd party options (sigma 120-400) are not optically as good as canon. the the 70-200 f4 is lens, is another popular, optically fantastic, light and inexpensive canon lens.
Nikon has done a fair bit to fill some of the gaps, by introducing good prime lenses, as well as their 24mm tilt-shift.

The Canon lenses EF 20mm f/2.8 USM and the 50mm f/1.2 USM are not correctly checked in the table as having USM. Cool table Tim!

I wish this table was someplace like Wikipedia so that we can all contribute as new lenses become available and have the end result of being more current.

Hi Tim,
I've done a lot of wedding receptions with the Canon system, and always get annoyed when the camera system gets fooled by say a white table cloth that partially fills a corner of the foreground and because it is so close it fools the system into under exposing the subject that might be 5-10m further away.

Now Nikon lense IF system transmits distance data to the camera can this help alleviate this bright forground problem?

Hi Tim! Awesome review here of the battery pack and flash heads systems. BUT you left out a major one... and thats the Speedotron Digital Explorer 1500. Let me know if you can review this as well.

BTW I use the Bowens Explorer 1500. Connecting 3000watt 4 heads to it is an awesome feature!!... give credit to British for their inventiveness! (007 James Bond gadgets come to mind).

They did screw up on one thing and thats the built in radio. Is is only as you know Bowens Pulsar compatible. And RF noise it emits interferes with (US) Pocket Wizard reliability. They should of made it only Pocketwizard built-in radio like Profoto. A silver lining..there is a solution to the RF interference, thanks to Pocketwizard who I think reported and fixed the problem...use a ferrite magnet between the cable and Pocketwizard. I am still waiting to hear back from Pocketwizard on how this works exactly so send me an email I will keep you updated. thanks, Rob
